In Paradisum is a two-movement piece for string quartet. The first movement features two key ideas: a drone and the chant melody from the requiem mass; through the use of glissandi, microtones, bow placement, and harmonics, the two ideas become indistinguishable.
The second movement then begins with four criteria: pitch, noisiness, rhythmic intensity, and dynamics. As the second movement proceeds, these initially-paired criteria become more and more independent from one another.
Coping Methods is a piece for saxophone and piano, a commission from a saxophonist friend Robert Ziobro. The piece is about the tools and mechanisms people use to deal with mental illness, specifically depression. The piece's structure is based on his principal coping method: listening to music. The piece alternates between sections of a pop song with contrasting sections of ferocious intensity. The piece was premiered on June 3, 2020 by Robert Ziobro.
Anything But Silent is a piece written for flute and piano as a gift to my fiancé Chay on the occasion of our engagement. Starting as a pastiche of Francis Poulenc's flute sonata, it is a highly energized piece using themes from an earlier work dedicated to Chay. The character of the work evokes her personality: passionate, sprightly, and fairly sassy.
Snowfall is a piece I wrote in the fall of 2018 for a trio of clarinet, viola, and piano. In this work, I was experimenting with transitions between stylistic and aesthetic opposites. Using fluctuations in rhythmic and gestural inertia, it evokes the fluctuating intensities of falling snow. This piece has been described as an "epic" and is a very challenging work. Due to the talent and hard work of the premiering performers, Snowfall had a successful premiere on April 28, 2019.
Lux Aeterna is the first piece I wrote for the First Congregational United Church of Christ Lawrence University Scholars, a small group of ten singers I sang with at the time of the composition. Writing it in the span of four weeks in the winter of 2018, it is a six-part a capella choral piece. Lux Aeterna received its premiered by the Scholars on May 13, 2018 and remains my most-performed piece.
